As you may or may not know i had some giant tree lily bulbs for mothers day this year and the instructions that came with them were very specific in saying NOT to plant them out until all danger of frosts had past, this leaves me worried that if i leave them in the pots they will just perish over winter, however i have never had any luck storing bulbs over winter. So my question is what would you do? lift and try to overwinter them if so how or try to somehow protect the pots they are in and leave them out, and also i have some gladioli that i put in pots not according to Monty Don on the tv i did it all wrong and should have suffered but as we all know plants will do there own thing and every single one flowerd they were so beautiful, however they were in shallow troughs so i found staking them very hard same question, lift and store or leave and move at the start of next spring? Thanks in advance xx

I don't grow hybrid lillies as it is a bit too wet here in North Wales for them and they don't survive more than a couple of years. Even gladioli are a problem. Lift pots off floor, use something that isn't going to soak up water like wood ... bricks or tiles are good. Wrap bubble wrap round and over top of pots, then cover the whole lot with polythene. I have daffodils in pots that I don't do anything with and they come back year after year. Only lillies I have are tiger lillies and they are in ground but still manage to survive our winters. When I planted them I put a 3 or 4 inch layer of gravel at the bottom of the planting hole to stop waterlogging.

Thanks Blues, I think I shall have to try to take the gladis out and dry them off as they definitely need putting into deeper pots for next year, the lillies I could probably store in the summer house which is dry but does get cold, could I use newspapers to wrap as an insulator instead of plastic as I have that to hand and they would be inside so remain dry, honestly I really have no idea what I am doing most of the time, I really prefer stuff you can just shove in and hack back when it gets too big some nice thugs really lol

Newspapers are excellent as long as they stay dry, probably better than the bubblewrap.
