Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had read any novels by Philippa Gregory? She's most famous for "The Other Boleyn Girl" which was made into a (rubbish) film recently. But she's also published two novels based on the lives of the plant collectors the Johns Tradescant.

"Earthly Joys" was based on the life of John Tradescant the Elder, who planted many famous British gardens including Robert Cecil's at Hatfield and many Royal Palace gardens. He was once of the first people to travel abroad collecting plants, and went as far as Russia.

"Virgin Earth" is based on the life of John Tradescant the Younger, and focuses on settlers in the New World in Virginia and the English Civil War in Charles I reign.

Really interesting books, even though they are novels, they have some basis in fact and are a good read.

Sounds worth following up Sarah!  Those of you who have been bored silly by my ruminations since I took early retirement will know that one of my things on the 'to do' list was to join the local library.  Well for nearly 2 and a half years I never seemed to have time!!  Well now I finally have!!  So maybe I'll see whats's about.  The really great thing about libraries nowadays is you can check online to see if there's the book you want in any of the libraries in the area!  (It's also great to be able to renew online too..... already had to do that!! )
Doesn't matter if your glass is half full, or half empty - there's still plenty of room for more wine! ;o)

Yes, I have discovered the joy of renewing online, especially when I have forgotten about my library book and then find it tucked behind a cupboard thanks to my daughter and it is due back that day (and it is 5 pm LOL) smiley2

Rhiannon is a member of our local library and reads a lot and can go through a novel in two days if its one she really likes. I occasionally have to change her books for her if she is working and its strange but every time she asks me to do this I always seem to end up having to pay for overdue books.

Oops, I meant to add I occasionally get a book out for myself. If you can find a copy or order one have a read about Rosemary Verey, a famous British garden designer (her home Barnsley House) and some of the other gardens she helped to re-design.
